Chatrabhuj Narsee School: Shaping Futures, Honouring Tradition

The foundation of a vision: enterprise, education and philanthropy
The story of
Chatrabhuj Narsee School (CNS) is deeply rooted in the vision, enterprise,
and philanthropy of the Narsee Monjee family—renowned for their
contributions to education, business, and community development in Mumbai.
This enduring legacy traces back to the humble beginnings and pioneering
spirit of Narsee Monjee, a trader and industrialist, and the subsequent
generations of his family, whose commitment to quality education in India
continues to inspire generations.
Born in 1887 in a small village in Kutch, Gujarat, Narsee Monjee displayed
remarkable entrepreneurial acumen from a young age. He began his career in
Burma’s thriving trade industry and later expanded his business across
India, China, and Japan. Beyond his business achievements, he was a
dedicated philanthropist who contributed generously to various social
causes. In 1930, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Swadeshi Movement, he founded
Golden Tobacco.
Shri Chatrabhuj Narsee – Founder Trustee of Jamnabai Narsee School, Vile Parle – believed that all learning must be a joyful experience. His views have shaped the philosophy and ethos of the school and how education is imparted. Some of his thoughts which are deeply entrenched into what the school stands for and how the school functions are shared below:
- Education is a blend of ‘ahara’ (right food), ‘vihara’ (right attitude), ‘achara’ (right behaviour), and ‘vichara (right thought). The balance of these elements are foundational to education.
- A teacher must be an eternal learner, therefore in-service training is of primary importance.
- In all aspects of school management and administration, extravagance must be curtailed and values of thrift encouraged.
- A teacher, like a flame, has to enlighten his/her student and the student must strive to excel in all endeavours. The child must learn to excel for his/her own sake. Self-study must be an integral feature of the child’s education.

Expanding horizons: from JNS to CNS
The influence
of Shri Chatrabhuj Narsee on his grandson Shri Sujay Jairaj is obvious. This
fourth-generation scion of the family is passionate about education and
continues the legacy left by his grandfather. In 2015, he established
Chatrabhuj Narsee School, in honour of his grandfather in collaboration with
the Methibai Devraj Gundecha Foundation (MDGF), in Kandivali East. CNS
upholds the same values of holistic development, academic excellence, and
character building that have defined what Shri Chatrabhuj Narsee espoused
for generations. This initiative was not just an expansion but a
continuation of a noble tradition, demonstrating an enduring commitment to
shaping young minds for a brighter future.
Built on a legacy of an illustrious educationist, CNS could not be contained
within the boundaries of Mumbai. Within a few years of its establishment,
the school has already carved out for itself a name in the field of
education and educational practices. CNS provides exceptional education
across locations, ensuring that more students embark on their journey to
becoming well-rounded global citizens.
The establishment of CNS stands as a
testament to the enduring vision of the Narsee Monjee family towards
education. It reflects their unwavering commitment to expanding educational
opportunities while maintaining the high standards and, ensuring that the
values and principles of Chatrabhuj Narsee continue to inspire future
generations.
Today, like its sister school, CNS too has spread its influence beyond the
boundaries of Mumbai. In 2022, the portals of Chatrabhuj Narsee School,
Amanora Park Town were opened to offer the students of Pune an opportunity
to avail of a school built on this legacy of excellence.
As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We might not be able to build the
future for our youth, but what we can do is build our youth for the future.”
This belief continues to guide the school’s mission—nurturing future
leaders, innovators, and changemakers.
